Full Heart, Tired Feet, and a Head Full of Ideas

I’ve just returned from Quilt Canada, and I’m still riding the wave of creative energy that surrounded me all week. What a joy it was to be immersed in such an inspiring environment—teaching, learning, reconnecting, and soaking in the beautiful buzz of creativity that filled every corner of the convention centre.
Teaching at Quilt Canada is always an honour, and this year was no different. I had the pleasure of sharing techniques and ideas with enthusiastic, talented makers. Watching students interpret the same starting point in different ways never stops thrilling me. Each stitch, each choice of fabric, becomes its own little story.
One of the best parts of an event like this is the people—so many familiar faces I hadn’t seen in years, and so many new friends made over shared admiration for thread colour or a beautiful piece of fabric. These connections remind me why I say yes to teaching again and again. It’s not just about fabric and stitches – though of course I love those things – it’s about community, curiosity, and the creative spark that happens when we gather.
There’s something special about being surrounded by so many artists and quilters at once. Walking the show floor, peeking into classrooms, chatting over coffee—everywhere you turn, there’s someone doing something interesting. You leave with your mind buzzing, your sketchbook itching to be filled, and your suitcase just a little heavier (thanks, vendors!).
I came home with tired feet, yes, but also with a full heart – and more than a few ideas to explore.
To everyone who took a class with me, stopped to say hello, or simply shared a smile in the hallway—thank you. Being part of this creative community is a gift I never take for granted.
Now to unpack, do laundry, and make space for all these new ideas. I’m grateful that I have some time over the next month to replenish my batteries and begin exploring some of the ideas that took root this past week – before I pack my bags again. A little quiet time in the studio is exactly what I need to reflect, reset, and create something new.
Thanks for reading. Next time, a few of my favourite quilts from the show. Until I write again, enjoy your summer!
