A bit of this and a lot of that …
Good morning from chilly Calgary! It seems that winter has arrived with a vengeance. The sun’s shining brightly and the air is crisp; a -32 degrees Celsius windchill factor this morning with a high of -20 degrees C for today and the rest of the week. Brrrrr … but it’s feeling quite like Christmas.
Are you ready? I am not, well, not really … still undecided on some of the gifts, still have a few to make, gifts to wrap, stuff to purchase, plans to make … usual for this time of the year. And you? what are you making this year? Are you working on presents? Baking?
Here’s a view of some work in progress. Small art quilt for a gift exchange. Still a long way to go and a few days left on which to get it done. Can someone guess that I work well under pressure?
I will post a photo of the finished product next week. Still a lot of hand stitching to do, beading, and whatever else I can think of at the last minute. Ah … the binding is missing too!
I had promised a few photos from Houston, and I never posted. It seems that it was so long ago, considering that we are already preparing for the 2017 Festival in November 2017. I have to get my proposal in, in the next few days. But … better late than never, so as promised, here are some groupings of photos I took:
A selection of quilts with faces. Some of my very favorite this year. I am not one to work on portraiture, but I can certainly admire them. They were stunning!

From the SAQA exhibit Turmoil and Tranquility, with a couple from one of my favorite artists: Linda Colsh.

From a special exhibit with work by Cindy Needham. Her work is exquisite. Tiny, tiny quilting, perfection personified! I would love to take a class with her. Anyone else interested?
A small selection of some quilts I loved. From left to right, top to bottom:
A Slice of Pie by Connie Kincius Griner of Burlington, North Carolina / 35 Sisters by Amanda Hancock and Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania / Little by Lilttle by Ximo Navarro Sierra of Canals, Valencia, Spain/ Coco (The Quilt) by Neroli Henderson of St. Kilda, Victoria, Australia / The Big Dry by Camilla Watson of Wellington, New Zealand / Koi Pond by Ruth Anne Yax of Atlanta, Georgia
Now for a change of pace … a set of images from my Rubbings with Paintstiks class. The ladies had a fun and relaxed class and made beautiful work. Thank you ladies!
Some new samples for one of my classes on Free-motion Machine Quilting text on quilts.
And last, but not least … an image of the Best of show prize winner, Cynthia England with “Reflections of Cape Town”. Cynthia is from Dickinson, Texas. The quilt took approximately 1 year to make and it has 8,400 individual pattern pieces in it. Hand appliqued and machine quilted. Yes, you read correctly! approximately 8,400 pattern pieces. It was stunning!
Hope you are having a good day. Stay warm and keep quilting!
