Bare trees – crafting memories
Today, I want to delve into a subject that’s deeply personal to me: the beauty and significance of bare trees, both in art and in life. Growing up surrounded by trees, especially with my dad as the general manager of a lumber mill in a small town, I developed a unique relationship with trees. The scent of sawdust in the air, the sight of neatly stacked wood, and the sound of machinery working harmoniously with nature shaped my childhood and, ultimately, my artistry.
Trees are more than just silent witnesses to the passage of time; they are vital to our ecosystem and our emotional well-being. They provide us with oxygen, shelter, and food, while also offering a sense of tranquility and connection to nature. The bare branches of trees in winter often evoke feelings of resilience and beauty, showcasing nature’s intricate designs and reminding us of the cycles of life.
For me, bare trees symbolize a kind of beauty in simplicity. Their stark silhouettes against the sky resonate with a profound sense of peace and nostalgia. Each winter branch tells a story of endurance, of life stripped down to its essence. This connection has inspired me to translate my memories and emotions into art.
In my upcoming class, “Trees, Trees, and More Trees,” I’ll guide participants in creating their own bare tree patterns, transforming the raw beauty of nature into unique pieces of art. Using innovative sewing techniques, we will explore how to capture the intricate details of tree branches and trunks, allowing each artist to express their own relationship with these natural wonders.
We’ll reflect on the personal significance of trees in our lives—how they have provided us with shade on a hot summer day, shelter from the wind, and a backdrop for countless memories. I believe that art can be a powerful way to honour these connections and share our stories while making pieces that are meaningful and visually striking.
The innovative sewing techniques I’ll be teaching aim to make the process accessible and enjoyable, even for those who may not consider themselves “crafty.” By the end of the class, each participant will leave with a unique piece of art that reflects their own story and connection to trees.
I invite you to join me in this creative journey. Let’s celebrate the beauty of bare trees and the deep-rooted impact they have on our lives. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or a curious beginner, there’s a place for you in this class.
