Creating a sense of place
In today’s fast-paced world, having a personal sanctuary where you can unwind and recharge is more important than ever. As our needs and lifestyles evolve, so does our appreciation for creating spaces that offer peace, comfort, and a sense of belonging.
Our needs and desires for our living spaces change over time. With the increase in temperatures in the past few years, an umbrella was not a good option anymore. I realized I wasn’t using my backyard as often because – as it faces South – it became too hot to sit outside, even at 9:00 a.m. in the morning in the height of Summer.
The decision to build a pergola came from a desire to create a defined space where I could relax and unwind. It wasn’t just about adding a structure; it was about enhancing the quality of life and fostering a deeper connection with the outdoors. As we grow and change, our spaces should adapt to support our well-being and reflect our evolving lifestyles.
For me, this journey led to the construction of a pergola in my backyard—a project that has transformed my outdoor space. A pergola is more than just an architectural feature; it’s a gateway to an enhanced outdoor living experience. I wanted a space that will offer quiet evenings with a book. A place to sit and stitch while enjoying nice weather. A place for family gatherings.
Did I have doubts about doing this? Yes, of course! It’s quite the structure and I purchased it online so you are always wondering what you are getting. One Friday, a few days before the pergola was built, I went to Rona+ to look at patio furniture and see what they had in the store. I like to see what I’m purchasing – old fashioned maybe, but I’m hesitant to purchase patio furniture online. I like to sit on it, touch it, look under the cushions …
And I am so happy I went, because they had one of the pergolas built in the store so I could actually stand under it, picture it in my space, touch it, walk around it, and look at how it was built – glad to say what I built was right! I left the store with a feeling of having had a weight lifted off my shoulders.
Building my pergola was more than a home improvement project; it was an investment in my happiness and well-being. It reminded me of the importance of adapting our spaces to meet our changing needs. As we navigate through different stages of life, our homes should evolve with us, providing comfort, functionality, and a sense of place.
It was hot on Monday when we built the pergola. I am thankful to friends and family who came to help. By the time everything was done, the BBQ moved to the other side, the outside light removed (it was in the way of one of the posts), lunch put away and the structure attached to the deck – and everything cleaned, I was so tired that I sat on the couch and stared. I wanted to cry. I wasn’t sure I liked it – had second thoughts about purchasing and building it, and yada yada yada.
The furniture arrived on Friday, already built as I was lucky that by the time I got to the store the only one they had left was the floor model. Bonus! No putting it together. I just had to arrange the cushions. Jeff, who delivered it, brought it to my deck. Not bad, right?
So now I’m all set. And yes, I AM happy with it. I am going to add some personal touches … I believe I have now a great space to enjoy the patio and the garden. Now we need the good weather to return :)
Inside, the work continues in my studio. More about that on my next post. Have a wonderful week. And until I write again, enjoy the Summer days. I’m off to sit on my new patio furniture :)

Love your observation in the following paragraph regarding: making changes in our environment at different stages life ———-‘It reminded me of the importance of adapting our spaces to meet our changing needs. As we navigate through different stages of life, our homes should evolve with us, providing comfort, functionality, and a sense of place.’
It is so true.
Thank you so much
