Phew! Here I am again …

Life goes on when you are not looking … and the days seem to fly by!  Houston came and went, and it seems that it happened eons ago, when it’s only been a few weeks.  I promise to post a few photos in the next few days from some of my favorite moments at Market and Festival.  If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen a few, as it was easier to post on Instagram from my phone or iPad than to try and write a blog.  Lots of things to do, people to meet, quilts to see, fabric to buy, friends to chat with and catch up with and very little time to sleep!  :-)  but it’s always so good to meet up with friends I only see once a year!  I wouldn’t give it up for the world!

The new issue of Quilting Arts Magazine, December 2016 / January 2017 is available.  Link:   http://www.interweave.com/store/quilting/quilting-magazines/quilting-magazines-quilting-arts/quilting-arts-magazine-december-january-2017

In it, I show you  how to free-motion quilt feathers in specific shapes, including squares, triangles, and circles.

Hope you enjoy the article.  Send me a comment and let me know what you think.  And stay tuned.  More to come in the next issues!

For all of you south of the border, a Happy Thanksgiving!  Keep creating!

  1. Ana, after seeing your Starry Night quilt using Inktense pencils in Quilt Festival magazine, I am so interested in pursuing this technique. Your work is absolutely beautiful. You have inspired me. Only wish I lived closer as to be able to take your classes. Just will try it and fly alone. Just one question please….using the pencils on a quilt sandwich are you able to apply enough pressure with a “soft” canvas? Also, can’t seem to find what size brushes you recommend. Thank you for sharing your talent. I appreciate your talent.

    1. Hi Bonnie,

I’m glad you contacted me. Sorry, was having issues with my Internet and couldn’t reply before this. Thanks for your kind comments. I wish you could come and see me some day. Stay tuned. I’m planning classes in my studio in the New Year, so maybe you’ll be able to join me some day?

I don’t have issues with applying the pencils to the quilted piece. You can apply as much pressure as you need for the colour to be really intense. Try it on a sample piece first, to make sure you have the results you want. Those pieces were painted with full colour applied, basically as intense as it would go for most of the piece. The Coffee Shop piece has some soft colour applied, and you have to basically barely touch the fabric for the really soft colour to appear. You can always add more later if you’d like it more intense.

I use all types of brushes, but mostly Simply Simmons Angle Combs in 1/2″, 3/8″, 1/4″ etc. Also some flats and rounds. The larger the area, the larger the brush. Smallish brushes for fine detail so the medium doesn’t go where you don’t want it and causes bleeding.

Hope this helps. I also hope I get to meet you sometime. If you need anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me. All the best to you this Holiday Season. And a great start to 2017.

      Ana
