New Batting – New Quilting Sample

Good morning,

The weather has turned a bit cooler in the past few days, but it’s supposed to get nicer again by the end of the week.  I can’t believe it’s mid-September already … and that means that I am getting ready to leave for Nova Scotia.  Almost 2 years in the making, and the day has come, so of course I am madly getting ready …

If you are taking the class with me at Pictou Lodge next week … a bit of a spoiler as I am showing here something I’m making for the class.  A bit extra as the class is three days long.  I decided we need a break from the monotony of sewing blocks together – although there are lots of those to be sewn – and the break will come as short free-motion machine quilting tutorials and practice sessions – here and there throughout the day for those who’d like to join me.

And for that, I decided I needed a few new samples with new batting.  The one I started working on on Monday around 9:00 p.m. is quilted using American Spirit Luxury Blend Batting from Fairfield.  It is 50% rayon fiber from bamboo and 50% natural cotton.  It is lovely to work with.  A light summer weight batting that is supple and soft.  No need to pre-shrink, although the Fairfield website gives you all the information on how to “wash” it if that’s what you’d like to do before you use it.

I am using a piece of pink silk for the top, and a multicolored mini polka dot cotton for the backing.  The thread is soft grey – Rayon from Wonderfil for the top, and a pre-wound DecoBob bobbin which works like a charm.

Here are a few photos.

I did some more quilting last night when I got back from dinner with friends.  I worked on more background quilting.  I am hoping to finish the piece tonight and I’ll post more photos once it’s all done.

In case you are wondering, it’s not a large piece, about 16″ square?

Well, that’s it for today.  Have a good day and keep quilting.

Ana
